Somehow your plate was always the last one made and the first one shared.

Especially after insisting for twenty minutes that you were not lost.
Thank you for every early morning you never mentioned, every worry you kept off our shoulders, and every time you answered the phone with, “What happened?” before we had even finished saying hello.
When we were young, we thought you knew how to do everything. Now we know you often figured it out because we needed you to. That somehow means even more.
We notice the quiet things now—the way you check the doors before bed, put petrol in the car before handing us the keys, and pretend you don’t want the last piece so someone else can have it.
We hope you know that none of it was invisible. We were watching. We still are.
You let go before we knew you had, then acted surprised when we turned around and found ourselves riding alone.
Rain, heat, an 8 a.m. start—you were there with water, snacks, and advice we pretended not to need.
You carried the heaviest boxes, fixed the loose shelf, and waited until the last possible minute to drive away.
We ring to check on you. Somehow we still hang up with instructions, a weather warning, and three things we should remember.
You gave us room to become ourselves while making sure we always had somewhere to come back to. That is a kind of love we understand better every year.
